A team of US researchers wanted to find out whether a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids could help reduce the frequency and severity of headaches.

Their study included 182 patients from the University of North Carolina, who were mostly female and had a mean age of 38 years. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three diets for 16 weeks.

“Although the diets did not significantly improve quality of life, they resulted in large, robust reductions in the frequency and severity of headaches compared to the control diet,” the researchers said in a statement.

The study was recently published in the BMJ Journal.
