Northern Ireland-based agro-food company Devenish has partnered with a Canadian nutritional supplement company to create a new company to take advantage of its omega-3 technology.
The new joint venture Humanativ, based in Meath, Ireland, formalizes a longstanding partnership between Devenish and Mara Renewables Corporation.
The two companies, both major players in the feed and food industries, have set themselves the goal of improving human health through the natural fortification of animal feed with a sustainable omega-3 DHA solution.
The result is products with a higher omega-3 content, such as omega-3 fortified meat and eggs.
Devenish Chief Executive Officer Owen Brennan said, “We are delighted to be working with Mara on this new project that will enable us to realize our shared vision of improving human and animal health through nutrition.
“The health benefits of consuming omega-3s have long been known, but research shows that less than 20% of the world’s population get the required amounts of polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids (PUFAs) through their diet.
“Our mission at Humanativ is to increase omega-3 DHA levels in the world’s population year after year by making them more accessible through naturally fortified meat and eggs.”
A world’s first clinical study conducted by researchers at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland on behalf of Devenish showed that regular consumption of naturally fortified omega-3 chicken and eggs improved omega-3 PUFA levels and can also lower blood pressure, both of which are associated with significant human health benefits.
Brennan added, “We have conducted extensive research and development to create a unique, sustainable, algae-based omega-3 DHA product, OmegaPro, which enables food producers to naturally enrich meat and eggs through animal nutrition.
“Through the cooperation with Humanativ and the inclusion of OmegaPro in the diet, meat and egg producers can offer a range of products with significant proven health benefits and, above all in many regions of the world, can make information on the packaging that gives their products added value.”
Tim Haig, Director and Executive Chairman of Mara added, “At Mara, we are driven by invention; Research and development of products that have a positive impact on human health and the environment.
“Our partnership with Devenish is a perfect fit for us – both companies have a firm focus on research and development and share a common ethos of driving innovation.
“With Humanativ we will offer our customers an end-to-end solution through our combined expertise in areas such as algae oil production, enrichment and on-pack complaints.”
