Study: Vegan Omega-3 Fatty Acids Reduce Risk of Heart Disease – Vegetarians

In a study recently published in the Journal of Hypertension, scientists found that eating foods rich in omega-3s on a regular basis helped improve blood pressure. According to the study, high blood pressure is one of the main risk factors for cardiovascular disease. However, the effectiveness of omega-3 fatty acids can also vary depending on the source.

Another study published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews in July examined and compared the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids from dietary supplements, fish, vegetable oils, and whole foods like walnuts. The results of the study showed, among other things, that omega-3 supplementation does not reduce the risk of death from heart disease, but it does reduce heart irregularities. A small number of test subjects who only consumed vegan, plant-based or whole omega-3 fatty acids showed a slight improvement in blood circulation. The researchers also found that ingesting vegan fatty acids can prevent certain types of heart disease, such as irregular heartbeat.

Plant-based sources of omega-3 fat include foods like ground chia or flaxseed, walnuts, and hemp seeds.
