It is expected that around 24% of this older EU population will experience a “hospital event” due to cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the next five years – a total of 38.4 million such events are forecast.
This will cost a total of up to 1.328 trillion euros over this five-year period and is a huge burden on EU health budgets.
The report, published today (May 10), commissioned by trade group FSE and conducted by research firm Frost & Sullivan, argued that omega-3 supplementation guidelines could go a long way in reducing this financial burden.
Using a review of the scientific literature on omega-3 benefits for this population, they found that CVD hospital events in Europe could be reduced by 4.9% if everyone was over 55 years old
received a daily dose of 1 g omega-3 EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid).
This 4.9% would mean 1.5 million fewer hospital events in the EU between 2016 and 2020 and a total of five years of savings of EUR 64.5 billion or EUR 12.9 billion per year in avoiding healthcare.

Patrick Coppens, FSE director for regulatory and scientific affairs, told NutraIngredients that the numbers are hard to ignore for EU policymakers.
Germany will achieve the greatest savings.

“This is economic data that can hardly be ignored. We believe that this should be done by EU policymakers. “
The economic analysis is the first of its kind on the subject in Europe and represents a tide change in the way arguments for an addition are presented, he said.
“I think there is a lot of literature and science to support the role of nutritional ingredients and supplements, but science is not enough. .
“So you have to link it from an economic point of view and really show the political decision-makers that significant profits have to be made.”
The benefits of the omega-3 heart are well documented as EPA and DHA already contain several recognized EU health claims for maintaining normal blood triglyceride levels, blood pressure and normal heart function for doses above the 1g daily value reported in the report.

In fact, around 20% of Europeans over 55 are already consuming omega-3s, the report said.
Omega-3 was selected for the first economic analysis of FSE on the basis of its “specific” scientific background, with 18 randomized controlled trials being included in the analysis.
Other nutrients could be considered for future economic reports, said Coppens.
